According to Johann de Wet, CEO of De Wetshof Estate, the 2025 vintage of Limestone Hill is one of the best years yet for white wine in the Cape – particularly for Chardonnay. The cool, mild weather throughout spring and summer meant that the vines enjoyed a slower growing season. And that’s a good thing.

The Robertson area is known for producing excellent Chardonnay, and De Wetshof is the queen! Now with an incredible EIGHT, site-specific Chardonnays in their portfolio - there will be a chard for you! 😉

I attended the launch event of this De Wetshof Limestone Hill 2025 as well as “The Chard”, which was held at Marble in Cape Town and was reminded of just how good De Wetshof is with Chardonnay - they have 8 different Chardonnays!

  1. LIMESTONE HILL
An unwooded Chardonnay originating from vineyards planted in deep clay soils, rich in limestone. A refreshing wine exuding flavours of grapefruit and green apples. The limestone-rich soils of Robertson play a crucial role here, too. “Limestone ensures natural chemical balance and enhances ageability,” explains Johann. “It’s this unique terroir that gives our Chardonnay its distinctive character.”

  2. CALCRETE
A crystalline character, nuances of wet stone, saline palate and oyster shell minerality are being highlighted by the linear unwooded profile.

  3. FINESSE
A classical, finely structured, elegant Chardonnay with strong citrus, nutty flavours and a wealth of bouquet on the aftertaste.

  4. BON VALLON
An unwooded Chardonnay producing a fresh, citrus-flavoured wine with a well-rounded yeasty, nutty aftertaste.

  5. BATELEUR
This premium, uniquely complex single-vineyard Chardonnay is produced only in exceptional vintages. Left on the lees and matured in French oak barrels for 12 months.

  6. THE SITE
Matured in French oak barrels for one year, this single-vineyard wine exudes fine aromas of lime and vanilla, rounded off with a nutty, creamy texture on the palate.

  7. THE SHARD (new)
Made in a glass barrel, spending time on the lees and completely unwooded. A zesty, lime-like palate with incredible acidity. A punchy chard that would complement fish dishes.

  8. CAP CLASSIQUE
A bright light green colour with lively aromas of lemon zest, fresh limes, green apples & brioche scents. A creamy mouthfeel of citrus and minerality with yeasty complexity.

Which would you consider your favourite?
Or better yet, get all of them ;)
