Die Stoep at Vriesenhof: Wood-Fired Food, Vintage Wine, and Rugby History in Stellenbosch
Die Stoep at Vriesenhof is a casual country restaurant and tasting venue set in Stellenbosch’s Paradyskloof Valley. Built around the former home, kitchen, and braai area of winemaking pioneer Jan "Boland" Coetzee, it pairs wood-fired local dishes with Vriesenhof wines. It serves as a relaxed, unpretentious winelands stop ideal for afternoon lunches, wood-fired sourdough pizzas, and tasting some good South African wines.
Founder, Jan "Boland" Coetzee’s Legacy at Vriesenhof
Jan "Boland" Coetzee was a Springbok rugby player and one of the key winemakers who shaped the South African wine industry, famously bringing Chardonnay vines into the country in the early 1980s. For over four decades, he hosted friends and family around his open fire at home. In 2024, that exact home kitchen and braai setup was converted into Die Stoep.
I love the modern yet relaxed farm stoep feeling with wide views over the Paradyskloof Valley. Inside, the wine tasting Room holds Coetzee's personal rugby memorabilia, photographs, and historical milestones. A lovely read whilst you are tasting some wine.
What’s on the Menu
Restaurateur Marc Botes and chef Keane Munro designed the menu around fire and seasonality. Cooking relies on a large outdoor wood-fired braai and pizza oven in summer, and an indoor open-flamed Spanish Pureruella grill during winter.
The menu focuses heavily on sharing dishes. Start with the house-made sourdough served with onion ash and miso butter (this was absolutely delicious by the way! And I don’t like butter!), or the crunchy pork scratchings paired with smoked paprika aioli. The 48-hour fermented sourdough pizzas are a standout—the white anchovy pizza with capers and olives or the classic Margherita using local Puglia cheese both hit the mark. If you are visiting with a group, the 850g–900g wood-fired Côte de Boeuf or the lamb riblets with apricot and sherry vinaigrette are solid picks. For dessert, the dark chocolate and orange potjie fondant for two is baked right over coals and served with melktert ice cream.
The Honest Verdict: What Works and Things to Consider
What Works
Unpretentious Vibe: You get high-end culinary execution without stiff service or tiny fine-dining portions.
Rare Cellar Access: Being able to wander through the historic vintage basement cellar and potentially purchase older vintages directly on site (and magnum wines) is a huge plus for wine lovers.
Rugby & Wine Heritage: The tasting room adds real historic context that sets it apart from generic wine farm eateries.
Things to Consider
Limited Evening Hours: Die Stoep closes at 4:00 PM every day except Friday, when dinner is served until 8:30 PM. Late dinner plans on weekends won't work here.
Sharing Concept Focus: The menu is structured around small plates, pizzas, and large cuts for sharing. If everyone in your group insists on individual traditional three-course meals, it takes a bit of coordination.
