Durbanville Celebrates 200 Years with a Rare Pinotage Release

Durbanville Pinotage 100 Collaborative wine

Durbanville has pulled out all the stops with this rare Pinotage release. 11 wineries from the Durbanville Wine Valley have come together to collaborate on this Durbanville Pinotage 2024 – a wine that celebrates 200 years of Durbanville, 100 years of Pinotage, and 100 years of Afrikaans as an official language.

Only 1 170 magnum bottles have been produced, making this release as rare as it is meaningful.

“Nothing says celebration quite like a magnum,” says Natasha de Villiers, manager of Durbanville Wine Valley. “This centenary is a reminder that Pinotage is a cultivar built for the future – especially in a cool climate region like Durbanville.”

Crafted with the grapes from across the Durbanville valley, this Pinotage is cool-climate and a great expression of Cape Town terroir. Just 20 minutes from Cape Town and influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, Durbanville’s diverse soils and elevated vineyards create wines that are complex yet refined.

A Label with Meaning

The Delft-blue label is a celebration of Durbanville’s land and legacy. It features the Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1825, a Cape Dutch homestead, and the unmistakable silhouette of Table Mountain. Surrounding these icons is a garland of pumpkins, wheat, and grapes – a nod to the valley’s deep agricultural roots.

All wording appears in Afrikaans, paying tribute to the centenary of the language and its cultural significance in the northern suburbs of Cape Town.

Crafted by 11 Winemaking Teams

The Durbanville Pinotage 2024 is the result of a unique collaboration between Nitida, Meerendal, Maastricht, Klein Roosboom, Groot Phesantekraal, Durbanville Hills, Diemersdal, De Grendel, D’Aria, Mellish Family Wines, and Canto.

While some contributed grapes, all were involved in the final barrel selection. The blend itself was entrusted to De Grendel’s Morgan Steyn and Charles Hopkins.

“This wine speaks of unity and camaraderie,” says Morgan. “It’s not your typical Pinotage – Durbanville’s cool climate brings freshness and refinement, offering a glimpse into the future of the cultivar.”

Tasting Notes

Expect layered aromas of blackcurrant, prune, and cherry, lifted by subtle hints of winter spice. On the palate, the wine is elegant and well-structured, with powdery tannins and a lively natural acidity that brings brightness and definition. It balances freshness and depth beautifully, with the potential to age gracefully.

Where to Get It

The Durbanville Pinotage 2024 is available exclusively in 1.5L magnums at R1 200 each. Each comes in a Delft-blue prestige gift box with gold-leaf detail, making it a collector’s dream.
