New Braai op ’n Stokkie Heritage Month Special Menu at Leopard’s Leap, Franschhoek
September in South Africa means two things – Heritage Month and, of course, Braai Day on the 24th. Nothing brings people together quite like food cooked over the fire, and this year Leopard’s Leap is taking things up a notch with their Heritage-inspired theme: “Braai op ’n Stokkie” (BBQ on a stick).
A World of Skewers
Turkey – The Home of the Kebab
One of the most famous skewered meats? The Turkish Doner kebab – slow-grilled slices of meat cooked on a rotating spit. Turkey also gave us Shish kebab and the chicken version, Sis tavuk, which inspired Dawid from Lekker Weskus to create a mouth-watering chicken kebab. Pair it with a glass of Leopard’s Leap Rosé for the perfect summer meal.
Greece – Souvlaki with a Twist
In Greece, Souvlaki is the ultimate grab-and-go meal – tender lamb skewers tucked into pita with tzatziki. Food stylist Sam Linsell has shared her recipe for a traditional Greek lamb souvlaki, which Leopard’s Leap suggests pairing with their bold and flavourful Shiraz.
Italy & Spain – Small Bites, Big Flavour
Travel further west and you’ll find Italy’s Spiedini and Spain’s Pinchos – little skewers often served as part of a tapas spread. Leopard’s Leap has the perfect lamb pinchos recipe that works beautifully on a snack platter with friends.
Portugal – The Hanging Espetada
Ever seen skewers served hanging from a hook at the table? That’s the Portuguese Espetada, which literally translates to “sword meat”. Dawid Weskus shares his recipe for a beef espetada, marinated to perfection and paired with Leopard’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon.
Asia & Beyond – Yakitori, Satay and More
From Russian Shashlik to Peruvian Anticuchos, the world is full of skewered favourites. In Asia, skewers take on a whole new life – think Chinese satay or Japan’s Yakitori. Leopard’s Leap has a recipe for chicken thigh and spring onion yakitori that’s sure to impress.
South Africa’s Iconic Sosaties
Of course, no Heritage Month celebration would be complete without a true South African classic – the curry lamb sosatie. Juicy lamb, sweet apricots and onions – it’s the perfect sweet-and-sour flavour combination. Chef Christiaan’s recipe is as traditional (and delicious) as they come, and you can taste it as part of the Rotisserie lunch menu at Leopard’s Leap this September.
Not a fan of lamb? No worries. Chef Christiaan has also prepared a chicken thigh sosatie recipe, saucy and full of flavour.
Stokbrood & Wine Pairing
Did you know that South Africans also love cooking bread over the fire? Stokbrood, or “stick bread,” is a true alfresco favourite. This September, Leopard’s Leap is offering a special Stokbrood & Wine Pairing in their tasting room.
For just R175 for two, you’ll enjoy freshly baked stokbrood with:
