Eleven: A Restaurant in Franschhoek that’s Leaning More Into Local Dining

Eleven Restaurant Franschhoek

If you’ve spent any time exploring the Franschhoek valley, you know it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of "fine dining" options. I’ve had the set menu lunch at Eleven during one of my recent trips to Franschhoek, and while it’s always been a chic spot in the main town of Franschhoek, they’re currently going through a transformation that I think is worth chatting about.

When I first visited, it felt like a high-end, global destination restaurant. But three years in, founder Ryan Shell and his team have decided to lean into a "hyper-local" philosophy. It feels a lot more intentional—and honestly, a lot more Franschhoek.

A "Sense of Place" in the Franschhoek Valley

I’ve always loved the aesthetic of Eleven (it feels relaxed but also elevated at the same time), but the kitchen is now focusing on becoming 100% Franschhoek-sourced.

It’s a bold move in a town known for international flair, but it’s a refreshing change, because tourists want to experience local. They’ve already reached a point where all of their protein and about 60% of their fresh produce come from growers within 12 kilometres of the restaurant. From the Three Streams trout to the Dalewood Fromage, you are quite literally tasting the terroir of the valley.

Why I’d Recommend Eleven for Your Next Visit

What stood out to me during my visit was how the restaurant has become more accessible. While they started with a strict tasting menu, the move to an à la carte menu is a game-changer. It means you can pop in for a sophisticated but relaxed lunch rather than a full-day commitment.

What to Order: My Menu Highlights

The menu is built around what’s available in the valley at that exact moment, so it’s hyper-seasonal. Here are a few things to look out for:

  • For the Balcony: If you’re just after a glass of wine and a view, the oxtail arancini (sourced from nearby Babylonstoren) is the perfect light bite. Great value too!

  • The Main Diners: I’m a fan of anything local, so the La Combé suckling pig or the whipped feta ravioli are definitely on my "must-order" list.

  • The Finer Detail: It’s the little things—like wildflowers on the table or porcupine quills used in the decor—that make the space feel grounded and connected to the land.

Sustainable Dining in Franschhoek

Beyond the food, Eleven is investing in the community. The team is now almost exclusively Franschhoek-based, with a focus on training local talent. It’s no longer trying to be a restaurant from "elsewhere"; it’s becoming a true Franschhoek local. I love that!

If you’re looking for a top restaurant in Franschhoek that’s elevated but still feels like it belongs to the community, give Eleven a look next time you’re wandering down the main road.
