Why Spice Route Paarl is a Great Cape Winelands Destination for the Whole Family

A great winery for Rhone-style wines in the Cape Winelands of South Africa is Spice Route in Paarl. This winery is a 45-minute drive from Cape Town and is a great all-day destination for various experiences, including for the kids. One thing that will strike you when you visit this estate are the sprawling views of the Cape Winelands (you can just about make out Table Mountain on the horizon). Here’s why I love Spice Route:

A Taste of Everything Good

The best thing about Spice Route is that it’s not just a wine farm; they offer so much more than wine! Inspired by the spice voyages of the 15th century, this winery isn’t about spice either - although they do have a pretty good spice offering like Chakalaka!

Here are a few stops you can’t miss:

  • Jewell’s Restaurant: Farm-to-table goodness. You have to try Neil Jewell’s legendary charcuterie.

  • La Grapperia: Wood-fired pizza and German-Italian feels. Their new Pinsa Romana (a lighter, crispier pizza) is a total game-changer.

  • The Drinks: Not in the mood for wine? No stress. Grab a craft beer at Cape Brewing Company (CBC), a gin tasting at Wilderer Distillery (you can even blend your own!), or a tea tasting at Nigiro.

  • The Sweet Stuff: Stock up on spices at Brenda’s Deli, get your chocolate fix at Beyers, or visit Sweet Angels for fudge and ice cream.

It’s Always Wine O’Clock

Okay, let’s get to the important part—the vino! Spice Route Wines is known for rich, deep flavours and serious Swartland terroir.

You can do a tasting in their rustic underground room or, my personal favourite, outside under the pergola soaking up those views. They have some GREAT pairing options:

  • Wine & Charcuterie: Paired with Jewell’s cured meats (I love this one and would recommend!)

  • Wine & Chocolate: A classic for a reason!

  • Wine & Vegetarian: Because plant-based food can be delicious too.

  • The Wines to Watch: Keep an eye out for the Saffron Rosé, the Tarragon Old Vine Chenin Blanc (which just snagged 5 stars in the 2025 Platter’s Guide!), and the iconic Chakalaka red blend (just because, South Africa).

The Kid-Friendly Zone

Parents! Spice Route is genuinely kid-friendly. They have two playgrounds, spacious lawns, and certain activities that will keep the little ones busy while you sip your Chenin or Chakalaka

  • The Spies Route Scavenger Hunt: A 45-minute adventure for kids 12+.

  • Kiddies Tastings: Juice and cookie decorating at La Grapperia.

  • Sweet Treats: The giant Unicorn Cloud candy floss and traditional Melktert soft-serve at Sweet Angels are super.

  • Get Active: There’s a pump track and MTB trails with Paarl Trails, plus art sessions at Eve Art Studio.

Bonus: It’s dog-friendly too! So the fur babies can join the fun.

The Spice Route Passport

This is a fun group activity if you want to do it all, the Spice Route Passport is a pocket-sized booklet that allows you to experience it all - guiding you along the way.

Coming February 2026, they are launching a refreshed version that is more flexible. You can select your own four tastings (including non-alcoholic options), making it perfect for everyone in the group. Plus, if it’s your birthday month, keep an eye out for their complimentary Birthday Passport! Score!

Shopping and More!

If you need a break from the feasting, you can browse local decor at The Trading Company, take a pilates class, or even book a pampering session at Beauty is Life.
