Why Ōku Asian Eatery is the Perfect Franschhoek Foodie Stop (Plus Restaurant Week News!)
If you’re planning a trip to the Cape Winelands, you already know that Franschhoek is the undisputed culinary capital of South Africa. We come for the world-class wine farms, but we stay for the incredible food.
Today, I’m so excited to share some delicious news from one of my absolute favourite spots in the Franschhoek valley: Ōku Asian Eatery.
If you’ve been following my Winelands adventures, you know how much I adore Ōku (and its fabulous sister restaurant next door, Yama Sushi Emporium and also Eleven Restaurant). Until now, Ōku was famous strictly for its immersive, multi-course Kaiseki menu. But great news for those of us who want a slightly more flexible dining schedule between wine tastings: Ōku has just introduced an à la carte menu!
Here is why this contemporary, Japanese-inspired gem needs to be on your Franschhoek itinerary this season.
The Best of Both Worlds: Kaiseki meets À La Carte
Don't get me wrong, the traditional Japanese Kaiseki menu is an absolute showstopper and remains the heart of the Ōku experience (and my fave). But sometimes, when you’ve been farm-hopping all morning in the Franschhoek wine tram, you just want a lighter meal or a quick, refined lunch before your next tasting.
Newly introduced this year, Ōku’s à la carte menu allows you to choose the food on your own terms. Whether you want to pop in for a few standout dumplings or build an informal lunch with friends, the barrier to entry has officially been lowered—without losing an ounce of the restaurant's signature quality.
Japanese Technique, South African Terroir
What makes Ōku so special is how perfectly they marry ancient Japanese techniques with the absolute best local South African produce.
Here is a sneak peek at what you can expect from the new à la carte offerings:
Asian-style Appetisers (Zensai): Do not miss the steamed bread served with aubergine chutney, soy kewpie, and pak choi kimchi. On a warm Winelands afternoon, their cold cucumber broth (with soy, dashi, sesame, ginger, and chilli) is insanely refreshing! Served in a teapot, but cold, it’s lovely!
Stunning Starters: Meat lovers will swoon over the Kroonstad beef tartare. Seafood fan? You have to try the “Mongolian Mosaic,” featuring Franschhoek’s very own Three Streams Trout, served with nori, watermelon, ginger, soy, and wasabi pearls. Those wasabi pearls are yummy!
Mouth-Watering Mains: Think green east coast crayfish with yuzu and tom yum, or locally farmed Steynsburg pork belly with irresistible crackling and bulgogi. Mouth watering yet?
Vegetarian Delights: Plant-based foodies are completely looked after! The smoked miso aubergine with tofu, tamarind, and peanuts is completely out of this world.
Wine Pairings & Premium Sake
As your resident Wine Girl, I have to talk about the drinks! Ōku’s beverage program is incredibly well-thought-out. If you decide to go all-in on the Kaiseki menu (which is now available for both lunch and dinner), I highly recommend doing the Kaiseki wine pairing. It perfectly pairs South African wines with Asian flavours so you don’t have to do the hard work. Alternatively, explore their premium Sake tastings for something a little different!
Exciting News: Ōku Specials for South African Restaurant Week 2026!
Since we are diving into Autumn right now, you already know what time it is: South African Restaurant Week is just around the corner!
If you haven't booked your tables yet, Ōku is participating, and it is the perfect excuse to experience their new culinary evolution at an unbeatable price. During Restaurant Week, Ōku will be offering exclusive set menus that showcase the absolute best of their kitchen. It’s an incredible opportunity to experience their precise technique and layered flavours—whether you're a returning fan like me or a first-time visitor.
Local Tip: Restaurant Week tables in Franschhoek get snatched up incredibly fast, especially for highly-rated spots like Ōku. Make sure you book your spot early so you don't miss out on these limited-time specials!
