A New Food & Wine Pairing in Stellenbosch at Vergenoegd Löw
If you’ve been following my adventures through the Cape Winelands, you will know that I’m a sucker for a winery that does a good food and wine pairing. Recently, a little birdy told me that there is something new at Vergenoegd Löw in Stellenbosch called the Indigenous Food & Wine Pairing.
The BIGGEST wine pairing yet!
I was actually blown away when I learnt that there are SEVEN pairings! Yes, SEVEN! It’s so big that it even needs to be served in a circle! I had a good giggle at that one! Seven indigenous ingredients are woven into these tasty bites - and you have to know that 7 is my lucky number!
Now, what also caught my attention is that Vergenoegd Löw is big on regenerative farming. You can imagine my delight when I learned that everything on your plate—from the honey and eggs to the beef and lamb—is from the farm itself. That’s something special!
The standout South African ingredients
Spekboom: You might know it as a carbon-storing miracle plant, but have you ever tried it in a brownie? Its citrusy spark perfectly offsets the rich chocolate.
Bokkoms: These salted, dried fish are used as a local alternative to anchovies in a stunning Caesar salad re-interpretation.
Kei Apple: Expect an "electric tang" on your tongue that you won’t soon forget.
The Classics: Think Sourdough roosterkoek over the coals, kaiings (crackling) for that hit of umami, and amasi (fermented milk).
Intriguing Pairings:
Some interesting pairings caught my eye:
Cured Yellowtail with roosterkoek and Kei apple preserve, paired with Cap Classique Blanc de Blanc (made from Chenin Blanc!).
Kaiing pastry and prosciutto served with a glass of Chardonnay.
Dexter beef carpaccio with a Spekboom chutney, paired with Merlot.
Each pairing will be thoughtfully presented by the staff which makes it such a great experience.
