Arty Wine Label for Bellingham & Pick n Pay by Local Artist
If you love a bold bottle of red wine and appreciate art, you’re in for a treat with the latest drop in the Pick n Pay Masterpiece wine collection. This year’s label is turning heads — and it’s thanks to a young, talented local creative who’s stepping onto the South African wine scene with flair.
Meet the Artist: Sinenhlanhla Chauke
Say hello to Sinenhlanhla Chauke, a 26-year-old art director and illustrator from Johannesburg who’s just designed his first-ever wine label — and it’s absolutely gorgeous! 🌟 Originally from Nelspruit, Sinenhlanhla is the founder of Studio 99Perspective, and describes himself as an “eccentric African creative” (LOVE that for him!).
His work is bright, expressive and full of storytelling, which is exactly what drew Pick n Pay to him for the latest Bellingham Masterpiece 2023 Cape Blend.
“It’s a really big deal for me,” says Sinenhlanhla. “They loved my style and asked me how I would bring my creative African perspective to life on a wine label.”
The Wine: A Cape Blend
Let’s talk about the wine 🍷 — because, yes, it tastes as good as it looks. The Bellingham Masterpiece 2023 is a Cape Blend of Pinotage, Pinot Noir, and Cinsault, crafted by Bellingham winemaker Richard Duckitt. It’s smooth and velvety with notes of blackcurrant, plum, and blueberry. If you’re wondering what to pair it with, this one is perfect with a braai, lamb chops or roast veggies. Yum!
Inspired by a Trailblazing Woman
The face on the bottle? That’s not just any woman. Sinenhlanhla was inspired by Fredagh Podlashuk, one of the founders of Bellingham Wines, who was known for her bold spirit and epic garden parties back in the day. He also channelled the vibrant energy of his own mom, Sonto Chauke, into the design.
“Her hair, earrings and styling are loud and deliberate,” says Chauke. “It’s a mix of race-day glam and hostess with the mostest.”
The final label features a fabulous woman in a flowing kimono-style dress with loads of detail in the background — lush gardens, trees, and vines. It’s basically a celebration of expressive African femininity, and it pops!
A Wine Label That Tells a Story
Sinenhlanhla first tasted Bellingham wines at the 2024 Pick n Pay Wine & Food Festival, and says the flavours inspired his creativity.
“I love illustrating bold colours with intricate detail. My work often centres around everyday people — seeing ourselves reflected on something like a wine label can spark pride and storytelling.”
